Our activities and programs

Over the course of many years of childhood development work, we have designed multiple acitivities and programs to educate our children in their free time and keep them entertained.

Children’s Meeting

Every Sunday our kids from the age of four come together with an adult – and get a chance to talk freely. How was my week? Do I feel good? What do I need? Do I wish a change in my daily routine? We encourage our children to speak up their mind and find solutions together.

Family Reunification

If the biological family is known, we invite them to come to us and spend limited, closely monitored periods of time with the children to support reunification efforts. Often, the reunification with the biological family is the overall goal for the Department of Social Development.

Therapeutic Sessions

We offer therapeutic sessions and give our children the opportunity to express their feelings. For example, this takes place in painting, educational sessions, or discussion groups. Unfortunately, we can’t afford professional psychological counsel for the children at the moment.

After School Project ”My Computer“

In case there are teaching capacities at the Children’s Home, we have started an After School Project, where local children get in touch with computers, often for the first time in their lives. We have also expanded that program to the older children of St. Joseph CYCC, in order to give them access to modern technology.

Garden Project “My food”

Planting flowers and vegetables and watching them grow helps children understand where food comes from – and, as a topper, they provide healthy meals for our daily meals. We believe that the responsibility for plants and vegetables also provides a therapeutic use for our protéges in
St. Joseph CYCC.

Traditional Dancing & Singing

Singing and dancing are very important parts of African and Zulu culture. We encourage our children to learn traditional songs and ballads from the area and perform Zulu dances that every boy and girl in Zululand grows up with. We also give them the chance to show their skills to visitors on special days and occasions.

Sports Day

Every friday, one of our careworkers is in charge of planning the weekly Sports Day. He or she encourages our children – from preschool to junior school – to play soccer, netball, hide and seek or other fun games. Most days, the children are also encouraged to use facilities like our trampoline or the playground.

Outings & Trips

We try to offer outings and trips to our children on a regular basis, as we deem it important to get them out of the house from time to time – especially in holiday times or on weekends. Examples are organising a fun day in another city, taking them out for icecream, excursions to the ocean, or visiting a children’s show in Durban.
